Our arts programme aims to make the hospital environment more welcoming, comfortable and engaging through exposure to visual arts, music and creative activity—both active and passive. While not a clinical arts or music therapy service, it enriches patients’ time in hospital and offers moments of stimulation, comfort and distraction when they need it most.

Arts at UHCW helps reduce anxiety, ease boredom, and support recovery by creating uplifting spaces and experiences. We are proud of the difference this work makes in transforming how the hospital feels for patients, visitors and staff.

We have over 100 metres of wall space dedicated to exhibiting art created by the local community. The gallery spaces are located in the busiest areas of the hospital, and are changed regularly to refresh the clinical environment. 

We also have an extensive permanent art collection spanning all 6 floors of the hospital and our adjoining Clinical Sciences Building. That’s over a mile of art!

“I’ve always loved how the hospital corridors are used as exhibition spaces. Over the years whether it be me waddling around in labour or pacing whilst a family member is in surgery, I’ve always made a beeline for the pictures to bring some serenity to my thoughts. Great scheme.” – Visitor

With your support, we transform patient waiting areas and treatment rooms into calmer, more uplifting spaces, with colourful art. Working closely with our Estates team, we deliver refurbishments whenever charitable funding allows – from refreshing walls with thoughtful colour schemes to fully remodelling rooms to improve layout and function. We also invest in new furnishings to create environments that feel more welcoming, comfortable and reassuring.

We collaborate with artists and specialist installers to design bespoke wall vinyls and artwork panels, introducing warmth and visual interest into clinical settings. Every element is carefully chosen to provide a positive distraction for patients and families, while remaining durable enough to withstand the demands of a busy hospital environment.

A few years ago we repurposed an old medical notes trolley into ‘Arty’, our affectionately named Art Trolley, filled with a variety of arts and crafts materials. In 2022 we were fortunate to receive funding that allowed us to develop our own bespoke kit designs.

Our bespoke art kits are offered to patients as a creative and enjoyable activity to do during a stay in hospital. Research has shown an active mind encourages recovery and facilitates an earlier discharge from hospital. Engaging patients in arts activities enhances their experience of being in hospital and helps in their recovery process.

Packs are individually wrapped for single use and offer a variety of options such as colouring, puzzles, fact finding and craft.
